- DIED. R.D. Laing, 61, British psychiatrist whose radical views
- rocked the medical establishment; of a heart attack; in
- Saint-Tropez. In his 1960 book The Divided Self: An Existential
- Study in Sanity and Madness, Laing argued that schizophrenia might
- be an individual's attempt to opt out of an intolerable world. He
- championed patients' rights, condemned the use of electroshock and
- lobotomies, experimented with the therapeutic use of LSD and
- mescaline. Although he later modified his romanticized view of
- insanity, Laing's break with conventional psychiatry made him a
- counterculture hero.
